BOATER EDUCATION IDENTIFICATION CARD
Who Needs One?
Effective January 1, 2007, all persons born after January
1, 1989 must have passed a boating education course certified
by the State of New Mexico and NASBLA (National Association of
State Boating Law Administrators) approved, or passed a
proctored exam that tests the knowledge included in the
course, in order to operate a motorboat (PWC or "Jet Skiis"
and sailboats included) in New Mexico.
The operator or "operating" person is considered anyone
navigating or otherwise in control of a motorboat's movement
including control of the motorboat's propulsion system. This
includes children under the age of 13 who are operating a
motorboat or PWC under the direct supervision of an adult.
The boating education certificate or card must be carried
on board the vessel whenever it is operated by someone
required to have a certificate.
